DON’T GO INTO THE DEEP END OF THE POOL

Summer is here. And with long hot days filled with withering temperatures and school out, the children of Green River are quick to spend the day in backyard pools, splashing and laughing—to keep cool!  Mrs. Cotter said that today Miranda can invite her friends over for a pool party! This of course makes Miranda so excited! “HOORAH!” say the children when Miranda calls her favorite friends—Bessie, Drissy, Moe, Tyrone, and Abner. As they arrive, Mrs. Cotter reminds them to be ever so careful and use personal floatation devices and most of all, “Don’t go into the deep end of the pool!”  Bessie, Drissy, and Tryone take this message to heart! Drissy makes sure to put on her floaties and Bessie is content to float on the inflatable raft! Tyrone is happy to be wearing his favorite orange floaties! And, Miranda is just chilling on the side of the pool in her favorite sunglasses. However, as is often the case, not all of the children are interested in playing by the rules. Moe has decided that he wants to swim in deeper waters. After all, he has been taking swimming lessons at the Green River Rec. And, he is almost eleven! Surely he’s a good enough swimmer! Besides, the shallow end is for babies.  As Abner climbs on the diving board, Moe calls “LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME! Aren’t I the bestest swimmer ever?”  The other children remind Moe of Mrs. Cotter’s warning. But, Moe doesn’t listen. He is having so much fun! Abner thinks, “Maybe I should go over there to swim also!” However, what Moe forgot was that Mr. Clown keeps a helpful eye on the children of Green River, and he heard Mrs. Cotter. Mr. Clown of all people understands how dangerous the deep end of the pool can be. So, he has been waiting there all along, just in case there was a lesson to teach. Moe learned it the hard way. Will Abner ignore Mrs. Cotter’s solid safety advice? Will he go into the deep end of the pool? Let’s hope not. But, Mr. Clown is ready… just in case.
